Coach Cameron Roberts here from Leaping Through Life and Small Business Master Coaching.
Now, let’s just keep things simple, when it comes to setting goals and let’s talk about health and fitness.
If someone was going on a diet because they wanted to lose weight, sure, they will lose some weight if they set a goal to lose weight and go on a diet. But guess what happens almost all the time when someone stops the diet. That’s right. They put the weight back on. And in most cases, they put the weight on more so.
So they might take off ten kilos but often overtime, they’ll end up being 12 kilos heavier. So what went wrong? Well, they didn’t change what food meant to them. Maybe it was an emotional support and so they starve themselves and they cut their calories back. Sure, they lost some weight but they didn’t change what food meant to them.
Here’s what I mean. My personal belief about food is that food’s a fuel source. So when I look at food for performance, I’m looking at the best food possible that I can get in my body, in my self that drive me everyday and give me the energy I need to do the things I want to do in my life. Yet someone else might use food as an emotional crutch. So when they’re having a stressful day or they had a fight with a partner, they go to the pantry and they kind of get themselves sordid by eating more food and it’s more of a comfort thing. It’s something that I can go to. It’s almost like a friend they can go to and eat some chocolate, eat some ice cream. And all treats are good but what I’m saying is that you need to change your beliefs about a certain thing before you set a goal in that area.
So using diet again, if you were going on a diet or you wanted to change the way you feel inside your body by using food, you need to change what food means to you.
You need to write down all the beliefs you currently have about food and you need to strike out all the disempowering ones, all the ones that are holding you back. And then you need to come up with some new beliefs about food like…
- food gives me more energy.
- When I eat great food, I feel alive and healthy.
- When I eat food, I can do anything when I eat the right food, things like that.
So fitness is the same. People set goals to get fit, join the gym and sure they do that for a little while, but then once it gets too tough, they pull back. Once life gets too busy, they stop going. They haven’t changed their belief about fitness. See, my personal belief about fitness is that if I keep myself in shape physically, I’ll be not only strong physically but I’ll be strong mentally and strong emotionally. And I know that gives me the edge in my business and in my life because I’m physically fit and I’m mentally strong.
Other people might look at fitness as a negative. They only join the gym because they want to lose weight, but they don’t really like the fitness. They don’t really like the exercise.
So again, what I encourage people to do at www.coachcamerons.com is to make sure they change their beliefs. Get into some sort of fitness activity or exercise program that you actually enjoy doing on a regular basis and then change what that means to you.
Find something you enjoy and write some empowering beliefs, stuff that makes you feel great about exercise…
- “Fitness makes me feel great,”
- “I’m alive when I exercise,”
- “I love my new body and the way my muscles feel tight and toned”
Once you set up your beliefs and you must do this on paper by the way. It’s not just something you think through in your head because if it’s just in your head, it’s an idea. It’s not going to come to fruition, right? You have to write it on paper to get it real so that your mind’s eye can see what you really want to achieve.
So here are the simple steps for setting and achieving your goals and be Leaping Through Life.
- Write down what it is that you want to change.
- Write down the empowering and dis-empowering or the positive and the negative beliefs you had about that topic/area that you want to change
- Then move on and create the goals or the objectives in that area that you want to achieve.
So it’s a very simple three-step process, have fun with it, enjoy your life, and I’ll look forward to seeing or hearing from you soon.
